GET, the state TAT and the county TAT are the same in all four counties in 2026, so today the answer is the same on every island.
5 nights at $250.00 in Maui County, plus a $150.00 cleaning fee
Add the taxes to the bill and the guest pays $1,661.97. If $1,400.00 has to cover them, you keep $1,141.00.

- GET is the state’s tax on everything a business takes in: 4% plus the county’s 0.5%, filed with the state.
- State TAT is the transient accommodations tax on rent from stays under 180 days, filed with the state.
- County TAT is each county’s own tax on the same rent, paid to the county.
Each tax is figured on the rent, cleaning fee included, and rounded to the cent. Added to the bill, GET can go up to 4.712%; not added, all three come out of what the guest pays.
Rates checked against tax.hawaii.gov and the county sites on 15 October 2026: state TAT, GET, Oahu, Maui County, Hawaii Island, Kauai.
Plain arithmetic, not tax advice. Registering is a separate step: a GE license and a TA license with the state, and your county’s own rules for short term rentals.
Why
Put the taxes on the bill.
A short term rental in Hawaii carries three taxes: GET, the state TAT and the county TAT. You owe all three as the owner, whether or not your guest ever sees them.
Show them on the bill and the TAT is figured on the rent alone. The GET you collect counts as income, though, so GET is owed on it too. That is why you can add up to 4.712%, not just 4.5%.
Fold them into one price and all three come out of it, about 18.5 cents of every dollar. On the example above, that is the difference between keeping $1,400.00 and keeping $1,141.00.
Whichever you choose, keep the rent, the cleaning fees and the platform payouts apart in your books, so each return starts from the right number.
Questions
Questions About Rental Taxes
What is the TAT rate in Hawaii in 2026?
The state TAT is 11% from 1 January 2026, up from 10.25%. Each county adds its own 3% TAT on the same rent, so the TAT on a stay comes to 14% before GET.
Is the cleaning fee subject to TAT?
Yes, when the guest has to pay it to stay. The Department of Taxation counts a mandatory cleaning fee as part of the rent, so the calculator adds it in.
Do I charge GET on top of TAT?
Not on the state TAT. When it is shown on the bill, the state TAT you pass on is exempt from GET, so the most GET to add is 4.712% of the rent. The Department’s guidance does not say how the county TAT is treated, so the calculator figures GET on the rent alone.
What is the county TAT?
Each county’s own transient accommodations tax: 3% of the same rent the state TAT is figured on, paid to the county instead of the state. Oahu, Maui County, Hawaii Island and Kauai all charge 3% in 2026.
Does the TAT apply to stays of 180 days or more?
No. The TAT is on stays of less than 180 days in a row, so a stay of 180 nights or more is not a transient stay and the TAT does not apply.
