The rate changed on 1 January 2024.
Maui County added its half percent surcharge on 1 January 2024, the newest of the four counties. Before that, retail sales and services on Maui paid 4 percent and the most you could pass on was 4.1666 percent. Since then it is 4.5 and 4.712. The free GET Pass-On Calculator works out the GET to add on any price.
If your books reach back before 2024, the years on either side are filed at different rates. An invoice template or a sales tax setting in QuickBooks that never got changed keeps charging the old one, and the difference comes out of your pocket.
After the fires
Insurance money, grants and loans.
If your business is rebuilding after the August 2023 fires, the insurance money, the grants and the disaster loans each get recorded their own way. None of it is sales, and a loan is not income at all.
Your CPA decides how each one is taxed. They can only do that if the books show each one on its own.
Vacation rentals
Three taxes on every night.
A rental in Maui County owes GET at 4.5 percent, the state TAT at 11 percent from 1 January 2026, and the county TAT at 3 percent, which started 1 November 2021. From 5 October 2026 the county takes its TAT through myMauiTAT.
